Congregants have gathered in a church in Ukraine to pray for Boris Johnson amid the “partygate” enquiry.
The former Prime Minister has been grilled by MPs after releasing a 50-page dossier, which he claims provides “bombshell” evidence that he did not intentionally mislead parliament over parties at Downing Street during lockdown.
Johnson is revered in Ukraine because of his support for the military following the Russian invasion over a year ago.
The mass was held by Mykolai Boiko, the head Ukrainian Orthodox priest in the Shumskiy region of western Ukraine, the Daily Mail reports.
Despite concerns about whether or not Johnson lied to parliament, the 42-year-old priest has dubbed him “one of the only leaders who kept his promises.”
“While other politicians were just all talk, Boris Johnson matched his words with deeds,” he told worshippers. “He was one who we could count upon.”
“If the people of Ukraine could ask for his return, then they surely would.”
The investigation into Boris Johnson’s behaviour continues.
In the UK, his actions have been widely condemned by church leaders.
Yesterday the United Reformed Church released statements from ministers speaking out against gatherings at Downing Street.
Rev Andy Braunston, who was a minister of four Churches in Scotland when the first lockdown began, told Premier Christian News: “There’s pictures of Mr Johnson holding his glass up at a farewell do.”
“The farewell do’s I was doing were funerals, and people weren’t allowed to mix there.
“Why does Mr Johnson think the rules don’t apply to him?”
