CofS minister's tea given to Barack Obama

Revd Liz Gibson from the Isle of Mull has only being growing her own tea for a year but their Scottish Antler brand has now been given to Barack Obama.

The tea was handed over as a gift from Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during her recent visit to the US.

"We were gobsmacked to hear about this," the minister said.

"It's all happened so quickly. We only took this up last year. It's a great advert for Mull and local produce."

She added: "I hope news of this generates some local interest in the work I am doing here.

"Drinking tea is a great way to have a conversation with somebody. People coming from many places to volunteer on the croft, as well as enquiries about the tea, provides a good opportunity for me to naturally talk about my work as a minister."

She said her tea bushes were now flourishing and they hope to provide another brew in due course.

"People are stunned that we can grow tea this far north but it has come on just fine," she said.

"Our biggest job has been protecting the bushes from the wind. They can deal with the cold but not the wind."

Speaking on Premier's News Hour Revd Liz Gibson said she is not sure whether the President will get to try the tea: "What I've been saying to folk is it's a gift to the President but goodness he must receive so many gifts, so I hope he receives it and enjoys it.

"And I'm aware that the Obama's, when they first went into the White House they did a lot with the gardens there and getting more grown there so I think he might like the story."
