CofE school children offer piggy banks after Poppy Appeal money stolen

by Hannah Tooley

One little boy, at St Stephen's Church of England Primary School in Kearlsey, gave the headmaster, Tony Lason, a hand written note:

Alex Croston, the little boy, had been saving his £8 to buy a Star Wars toy.

Mr Lason wrote on his blog that it "brought a lump to his throat."

On his blog he said: "Yesterday morning was one of the low points of my time at St Stephen's when I arrived to find that the school had been broken into overnight.

"As well as considerable damage to the building and the theft of laptops and i-pads, the thieves had also helped themselves to the money collected by our children as their contribution to this year's Poppy Appeal.

"THIS morning however, the feeling of devastation turned to one of immense pride as three of our children donated the contents of their 'piggy banks' to help replace the stolen money.

"One of the children (Year 2) sent in his contribution with a letter explaining why he was doing it - see above.

"It brought a lump to my throat and a tear to the eye of Mrs Bonnar! [Judith Bonnar is the Office Manager]"

Alex Croston told The Daily Express: "It made me feel sad when the men broke in because we had out computer stolen and the window was smashed.

"I wanted to raise money because they took the Remembrance Day money for when you have two minutes silence and think about the soldiers that were there.

"I thought about them stealing the money so I thought I would empty my money box and bring my money in."

He told reports he got £1 a week from his granddad and "If I do good work at school, I sometimes get money."
