UK churches join 72 hour Pentecost prayers for 'soul and unity of the nation'

by Donna Birrell

Churches across the UK are taking part in a 72-hour prayer focus over Pentecost weekend with a special focus on the family, community, and the nation.

Shine At Pentecost 2025 is a project of the National Day of Prayer & Worship (NDOPW) which last December saw over 1500 participating churches taking Christmas carol services and evangelistic events onto the streets and marketplaces. Organisers say the event is uniting churches in praying for the soul and unity of our nation at a time of tension and much political debate and division – especially over immigration.

Churches are also being encouraged to take evangelistic and prayer events out into their local communities.

NDOPW convener Dr Jonathan Oloyede told Premier: “We're praying, not just for revival of the church but praying for revival in people's lives, for the move of God in communities, for churches to be revived, for communities to feel the impact of the Gospel, for the nation to be changed - all sorts of prayer points.

"At a time where many church leaders are reporting God at work across our nation in new and surprising ways, our response as a Church must be to pray earnestly for a mighty moving of God’s Spirit, and for all Christians to be open to be led by the Spirit wherever he may lead."

The prayer initiative is also being endorsed by the Evangelical Alliance as well as several denominations and streams.
