Ecclesiastical Insurance says the number has dropped from 659 in the first half of last year to 195 this year.
Most of the pay-outs were to replace lead stolen from roofs.
The company has raised fears the number could increase again in the coming years as a Home Office back scheme to prevent lead theft comes to an end.
The police's National Metal Theft Taskforce will lose its £6million funding.
