Church standing for justice after expected Grenfell Tower fire charges

by Tola Mbakwe

Police investigating the Grenfell Tower fire have written to residents suggesting there are grounds for corporate manslaughter charges. But campaigners want something stronger.

Christian MP for Tottenham David Lammy said the maximum punishment, which is a fine, wouldn't represent justice for the victims.

Pastor Derek Wilson from the Tabernacle Christian Centre agrees because officers don't have the power to arrest people under the offence of corporate manslaughter.

He said: "The residents need answers. People have died unnecessarily and like any inquest that is held, someone needs to be held personally accountable for this and just having it as their corporate situation; no one is taking direct responsibility.

"As the Bible says, God is a God of justice. He said seek justice speak out for those who cannot speak. And that's what we're doing as well by providing spiritual and moral support, we are speaking out for justice."

Agreeing with the stance, Kensington MP Emma Dent said Senior councillors and decision-makers linked to the Grenfell Tower refurbishment cannot stay in their roles as a corporate manslaughter investigation looms.

Asked about the future of the council and Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) leadership, Dent Coad said: "It changes by the day, we are looking at the taskforce leads who are coming in and what their records are like, but I really don't see how anybody who was anywhere near the actual decision-making process could possibly continue working, any of them at all.

Wilson told Premier that his church and other churches in the area are continuing efforts to support the fire survivors.

He said: "We're doing everything we can do by going out to the hotels in the evening with our congregation and thank God we've been seeing survivors turning to Christ and they've been prayed for.

"They say if it wasn't for us they don't know what they would have done. Several have already attempted suicide.

"We're bringing peace and the cross into this awful tragedy."
