Church pastor who put up anti LGBT poster says he did it 'out of love'

by Alex Collett

A church in Halling Kent has sparked a reaction from village residents, after displaying a poster on its noticeboard, stating: "We don't celebrate Pride, we preach Christ crucified" says he did it "out of love."

People slammed the poster as "barbed" "bigoted", and "unnecessary" and as a result residents in the village of Halling are now organising a 'Pride parade' in opposition of Halling Baptist church's statement.

A fellow vicarage road resident Elizabeth Kitchener created her own home-made ' Be Kind' poster, which was placed over the sign.

Kevin Felix Hollington is Halling's Baptist church pastor, he told Premier of his justification for putting up the letter: "Everything we do as believers in Jesus Christ is rooted in love and that love is first and foremost towards God.

"That love is also to our neighbours. God commands us to love God and to love our neighbours, but love is not a gushy feeling that we go along with wherever our feelings go.

"A husband is not free to express his love for another woman, he's bound by his marriage vow to love his wife.

"Otherwise it would be called adultery, so the boundaries have been set, by God.

"All of us have pride all of us are infected in a sense with pride, we don't want to be told what to do.

"We don't want God's boundaries, we want us to be the ones who determine the boundaries, but God has already set the proper boundaries for everything.

"We cannot celebrate Pride, so I put the poster up because of love and this lovee requires us to proclaim what we believe, but also what we are against."

There have been many comments on Facebook about the poster and an organisation of a parade.

The New Town Social Club  backed the idea of a village-wide celebration of a 'Pride' parade.

They posted: "We at Newtown Social Club fully support the Gay Pride March within our village. We have many LGBT members as well as LGBT volunteers on our committee. Love is never wrong!"

The Five Bells Pub also put forward the suggestion of a parade, posting on social media, posting "So... Pride Parade?" and the idea met with a positive response.

Pastor Hollington told Premier that he believes people are afraid to speak out against the LGBT movement, saying: "I would speak to people, neighbours friends, and there seems to be people who are concerned with what they see about the the LGBT movement, but they are afraid to speak out.

"They fear speaking out and so I've had a mixed response."

Premier has contacted the The Five Bells pub who do not wish to comment.

Premier has also reached out to The New Town Social Club.
