The competition where bakers compete to impress Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood begins on Wednesday evening on BBC 1.
Rev Lee Banfield from Cornerstone Church in Bromley Cross in Bolton, told John Pantry on Inspirational Breakfast he began baking back in 1984 when he was recovering from a back injury.
He said: "I decided to make a cake while the family were out, I needed something to do whilst I was in recovery.
"So while my wife was at work and the children were at school I decided to make a cake, and I went into the kitchen and baked a lemon tart and we thoroughly enjoyed it when we had it for tea - and since then I've been baking."
He will be competing against eleven other contestants and last year the competition had more than 15 million viewers.
Rev Lee Banfield said this show is unlike other TV competitions: "I think the key is the fact that everybody is supportive and helps each other, unlike any other competition on television.
"All the contestants are interested in each other and how each other is going with their bake."
He told Premier he was excited to be part of the show: "It was wonderful to be involved in it, just to walk across that grass, down into the tent and then walk in there and put your apron on - it just felt unreal really.
"And what I am planning to do this Sunday, is take to church what I did bake the first week in the tent."
In Wednesday's opening episode, the twelve will try and create a classic British style of cake.
