Church of Scotland: Scotland needs African missionaries

The message was made by the Moderator of the Church's General Assembly Dr Russell Barr during a visit to the small village on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.

Speaking at a church in Kikuyu, which regularly attracts 900 number, he said: "You do need not missionaries anymore. We do.

"Your faith has found its African heart and soul and its African voice. You need to teach us again how to find our Scottish heart, and soul and voice because your Church is growing and, sadly, our church is not."

Dr Russell also visited a church serving in the Kibera neighbourhood of Nairobi, which is home to one of the biggest slums in the world.

He said: "Kibera parish must be one of the most challenging parishes anywhere in the world. Set in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, it is home to over one million people, most of them enduring grinding poverty."

Dr Russell also visited the graveyard (pictured above) of Rev David Steel at Church of the Torch in Kikuyu. Rev Steel is father of former Scottish Liberal Democrats leader Lord Steel.

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
