Church-going Jeremy Hunt appointed new Chancellor

by Donna Birrell

Downing Street has confirmed that Jeremy Hunt is the UK's new Chancellor of the Exchequer.

It follows the sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday, following turmoil on the financial markets after his mini Budget on 23rd September.

Kwarteng cut short a meeting with international financial experts in Washington DC to return to London ahead of his removal from office.

Jeremy Hunt, who's a Christian, is a former foreign secretary and health secretary. He stood against Liz Truss for Conservative Party leader in the summer.

After being knocked out of the ballot, he  voiced his support for Rishi Sunak during the remainder of the campaign.

The 55-year-old is a big supporter of the cause of Freedom of Religion or Belief. In 2018, while foreign secretary, commissioned an independent review into Foreign Office support for persecuted Christians.
The report by the Bishop of Truro, Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen presented 22 recommendations for the UK Government for changes in policy and practice to protect freedom of religion and belief around the world.

Asked about his faith by The Times in 2019, Jeremy Hunt said: "I sometimes pray. I'm like regular Church of England folk: it's part of my life and my identity, but I don't think it defines my politics."

He said he goes to church on Sundays and sometimes receives communion at a midweek lunch-hour celebration in the House of Commons.

Hunt, who has been the MP for South West Surrey since 2005,  has been on the backbenches since Boris Johnson became prime minister in 2019.

Jeremy Hunt has been Chair of the Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee since 2020.
