Christians in Ukraine mark Palm Sunday despite threat from Russian Invasion

by Reuters Journalist

Christians across Ukraine gathered on Sunday to mark the start of the Holy season.

For Orthodox Christians, Easter is normally celebrated a week after Western Easter as it follows the Julian calendar.

Services were held in the devastated cities of Bucha and Lviv. People in Ivano-Frankvisk, western Ukraine, were also pictured holding willow branches to honour the day.

In Bucha, where Russian forces have been accused of mass killing and rape, believers gathered in a church yard for a mass and were sprayed with holy water.

It’s understood at least 50 people attended a service at t the Church of St. Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints,, carrying willow and praying for the dead.

In Lviv, Ukrainian servicemen were sprinkled with holy water as they attended the consecration of the willow branches on Palm Sunday.

Local citizens attended a worship service at the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Lviv. Important objects and artifacts are wrapped in white cloth to protect them from the damage caused by the Russian invasion.

Christian leaders had called for a truce and an end to the fighting during Easter.
