Pray for volunteers as they run to avoid floods in Nepal

by Anna Rees Green

Volunteers in Nepal have had to run to avoid further floods and landslides after a devastating mudslide in the Himalayas, which has left almost 500 dead.

Krishna Adhi-kari, executive director at International Nepal Fellowship, told Premier Christian News that volunteers are putting their own lives in danger. Some have had to run out of the areas they are serving, as new flood warnings pop up.

"Our staff today were in the field, and somebody said that another glacier [was] outburst," he told Premier. "So, they had to run away, run away to the top... [we have] lost connection with them. So, I'm praying that our team stay safe."

"So many people are missing, and churches are affected," he added.

Tearfund works with local partners in the region, and said that food, water and shelter are "at the forefront" of its response.

"[We] are currently coordinating our response with initial rapid assessment... government and our local partners, to help provide immediate relief to people affected," the charity stated.

Ali Wood, Tearfund’s disaster risk management lead, said: “The tragic scale of this disaster is devastating, and the families and people affected are in our constant prayers, particularly the most vulnerable and hardest to reach. In our response, the immediate needs of these communities - whether for food, water, or shelter - will be at the absolute forefront of all our efforts.”
