The First Baptist Academy, a Christian private school in the US state of Texas, has fired one of its longest-serving teachers for attending a drag show.
According to local reports, the school ruled that Kristi Maris and a co-worker had breached a condition of employment to “act in a godly and moral fashion at work, on Facebook and in my community”.
Calling it “a blast”, Maris posted on Facebook photos and videos of a group of her and a group of friends attending a drag show at a popular spot in Houston known for burgers and drag shows.
Speaking to ABC13, Maris, who had been working at the school for 19 years, said she was “heartbroken” and would have never thought she was breaking the employment clause by attending the show.
“They’re entertainers. I would’ve never thought in a million years that this would happen. Never. We were in disbelief - we still are.
“We were heartbroken. We had relationships with parents and the kids, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye to a lot of the kids.”
She continued: “For almost 20 years, I've taught children to love each other. I've talked to them and told them, 'You have to get along. God loves us all equally.' And that's the way we should be," Maris said. "We should love everybody, and that's what we've been teaching, but they're expecting us not to do that."
Hamburger Mary’s will host a show for Maris and her co-worker to “raise money… for their families, but to also help raise awareness that drag queens and the LGBTQIA+ community are not bad people”.
