Christian MP warns of 'serious problem in the criminal justice system'

by Aaron James

Dawn Butler (below), Labour MP for Brent Central, was speaking on the back of a Ministry of Justice report spearheaded by another Christian Labour MP, Tottenham's David Lammy.

The report found for those convicted at magistrates' court, custodial sentences were more likely for black and mixed race young males than white young males.

Black men were also found to be over three times more likely to be arrested than white men, and in prisons black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) males are almost five times more likely to be housed in high security for public order offences than white men.

The Lammy review's final recommendations are expected to be presented to ministers next spring.

Dawn Butler shadow minister for diverse communities, said the report 'suggests there is a serious problem in the criminal justice system'.

"There are many areas which need to be investigated," she added.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, David Lammy (below) said: "My experience in talking to our senior judiciary is that they're very concerned about these issues. It's welcomed by the Labour Party but set up by a Conservative government, so this is a cross-party moment.

"A key part of what I'm saying today is about that rehabilitation story - how you can find redemption having experienced our prison system, for people to be able to have a second chance.

"That is at the heart of the Christian message and something so many organisations are keen to see achieved."

Simon Woolley, a campaigner from Operation Black Vote, told Premier: "At the moment they [criminal justice institutions] are shockingly white. Their disproportionality is herding a generation of black people to incarceration.

"It's clear that there's so much unfairness going on that our criminal justice system frankly should be ashamed of itself.

"Those in Westminster and local authorities are public servants. We should not be asking that things are changed... but demand it."

Justice Secretary Liz Truss said: "Part of building a fair justice system that works for everyone is drawing on the best talents from every background in Britain.

"That's why I have announced a range of measures to make it easier for talented people to become senior judges based purely on merit, and why I have asked David to broaden his review to cover judicial ethnic diversity across tribunals, civil and family courts."
