Christian MP: "extend hand of friendship" to Muslims after Normandy priest murder

by Aaron James

The call from Christian Conservative MP Kevin Foster comes after Islamic State claimed responsibility for the murder of Fr Jacques Hamel (above) in Normandy on Tuesday.

Kevin Foster told Premier we must not let terrorists win by allowing them to divide our communities.

"As Christians we offer a hand of friendship to those who are appalled by this attack as we are," he said.

He said the attack was "shocking" but we "must not go down the extremist narrative that this is somehow a war between Islam and Christianity".

"It isn't," he stressed. "It is a war between extremists and everybody else".

Abdel-Malik Nabil Petitjean, 19, and another 19-year-old local man, Adel Kermiche, stormed the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during Mass on Tuesday.

They held five people hostage - the priest, two nuns and an elderly couple - before fatally slashing the priest's throat and seriously wounding the other man.

Another nun at the Mass slipped away, raised the alarm, and the attackers were killed by police as they left the church.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State group, which released a video allegedly showing Kermiche and his accomplice clasping hands and pledging allegiance to the group.

Mr Foster added: "We all have our own path to God. I'm a Christian, I'm strong in my faith therefore I don't think any other faith is a threat.

"It's only people who are weak in their faith or who have distorted visions of their faith that can possibly believe attacking others is justified".
