Christian MP criticises Government's failure to refer IS genocide to UN

by Aaron James

The Christian Conservative MP for Congleton Fiona Bruce has tabled an Early Day Motion expressing "profound concern" that the government's failed to act following April's vote.

The vote in favour of recognising Islamic State's actions against Christians and other minorities as genocide passed with 279 MPs voting in favour and none voting against.

Their crimes include mass murder, rape, sexual slavery, and the destruction and illegal appropriation if Christian and other buildings, land and artefacts.

Fiona Bruce's EDM says:

"That this House expresses profound concern that, despite voting 279 in favour and none against the motion calling on the Government to refer genocidal atrocities of Daesh to the United Nations Security Council on 14 April 2016, still, no such referral has been made; recalls the words of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in an article in the Telegraph on 27 March 2016, Daesh are engaged in what can only be called genocide of the poor Yazidis, though for some baffling reason the Foreign Office still hesitates to use the term genocide; and calls on the Government to ensure that the unanimous will of Parliament is implemented with urgency."

The tabling of an Early Day Motion is a form of in-house Parliamentary petition. The more MPs sign it, the more likely it is to be brought to a debate and vote.

Premier's Political Editor Martyn Eden says the EDM is used by backbench MPs to keep pressure and scrutiny on the government to follow through with promises and proposals.

Given the number of MPs who voted in favour of recognising IS' actions as genocide in March, it is likely the EDM will gather a significant amount of signatures.
