Christian leaders launch 2025 Westminster Declaration to ‘re-Christianise’ Britain

by Donna Birrell

Christian leaders and theologians have come together to sign a declaration aimed at "re-Christianising" Britain.

The 2025 Westminster Declaration which was signed at the weekend, hopes to protect debate around areas of concern including freedom of belief and conscience, biological sex, gender and the value of human life.

The declaration says that there have been serious consequences because Britain’s Christian heritage has been ignored.

it reads: "Some of the choices made by Parliament and others in authority about the nature of human life, family relationships, sex education in schools, end-of-life care, and the use and development of new technologies are having serious consequences…

"By ignoring Britain's Christian heritage we have endangered human life, weakened society, and created a fragmented nation uncoupled from its formative traditions, and without a unifying vision for its future.

‘We oppose therefore any attempt to subordinate religious freedom to the demands of activist or political groups seeking to assert dominance."

The former government Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, Fiona Bruce was among those leading the launch. She said there was a "spiritual battle" at the heart of British politics, but urged more Christians to enter the political arena to inform debate over issues such as assisted dying.

She added that she hopes if more young Christians enter Parliament, they will "not just hold back this tide of liberalism and progressivism but they could actually see Christian principles brought back into society, and society changed".

The former Bishop of Rochester, Monsignor Michael Nazir Ali told Premier Christian News there was a similar declaration in 2010, but a new one was needed to address issues of today.

"There are new opportunities, good things that are happening, but there are also matters of concern," he said. "So for instance, the assisted suicide legislation is being debated in Parliament at this time, and that causes many concerns for Christians working in the medical world, apart from from others.

"There is also the question of the future of marriage and the family, and then we've had already legislation about abortion, and the possibility of that happening right up to term. AI is something entirely new, and many people are enthusiastic about it. Others are fearful."

Former BBC journalist Robin Aitken who hosted the conference said he hoped the declaration would lead the country back to Christianity:

"What today is about is nothing less than the re-Christianisation of Britain…

"If that sounds ambitious, it is. There has never been and will never be a better blueprint for human flourishing and happiness than the rules laid out for us by God Himself in the person of Jesus Christ."

The aim is to get at least 100,000 signatures. You can find out more here.
