A Christian philanthropist and media investor has called on Elon Musk and other tech leaders to bring greater transparency and accountability to social media platforms.
Speaking at Oxford University in a lecture titled Reflections of an Accidental Media Owner, Sir Paul Marshall said: “Social media platforms like X, Bluesky or Meta should be required to publish all the algorithms that they use to analyse or influence our preferences.
“Elon Musk believes in open source and transparency for manufacturing. He should do the same for X.”
A member of Holy Trinity Brompton and a supporter of the Alpha Course, Sir Paul criticised Big Tech’s lack of responsibility, arguing platforms should be regulated like public utilities, as reported by Christian Today.
He said: “They have power without responsibility. Platforms need to have less power and more accountability.”
Sir Paul, who owns The Spectator, UnHerd and is a major investor in GB News, urged for a "golden thread of responsibility and accountability" to run through modern media, whether corporate, independent or individual.
“Truth will be sacrificed even more in the quest for eyeballs, and tribal conflict will become ever more dominant," he concluded.
