Christian lawyer freed in China

Gao Zhisheng is well known for defending believers in the country and was jailed in December 2006 for "inciting to subvert the state power."

According to social media reports he's been freed along with his brother but it's not known if his freedom comes with conditions.

It's thought he's staying at his father-in-law's home in Urumqi.

The lawyer was briefly released in 2010 but was jailed again a few months later accused of violating probation rules.

Chritians Solidarity Worlwide's Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: "We welcome reports that rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng has been released and reunited with his brother.

"Gao Zhisheng, sometimes called 'the conscience of China', has been through years of imprisonment, torture and enforced disappearance.

"We call on the Chinese government to grant Gao his full freedom, without any further conditions or restrictions on him or his family in China."
