Christian US adoption network begins to split over LGBTQ families

by Premier Journalist

Safe Families for Children, a U.S. non-profit which offers an alternative to foster care, is facing a crisis as several chapters leave over issues of LGBTQ families.

SFC is an organization that has founded 100 chapters across the country as they help families deal with crises and care for at-risk children. However, many of those chapters have decided to splinter away to make sure that they only work with traditional families. Some supporters have accused SFC of being taken over by the "woke crowd." However, SFC's leadership claims that there has been no change in leadership. SFC Spokesperson Cheri M. Jimenez told MinistryWatch that "there's been absolutely no 'woke' uprising and no change in policies at the nonprofit."

What did complicate the decision was what their fellow adoption organizations chose to do. When Bethany Christian Services decided to allow LGBTQ families to adopt children, many groups wanted SFC to declare its opposition to working with LGBTQ families. However, to do so would risk losing many chapters' federal funding.

"Our mission is to change the culture by working with conservative, evangelically-minded churches that can recruit Christian volunteers to care for children in crisis," Jimenez told Ministry Watch. "Our mission is not changing the culture by making a cultural stance on marriage. That's not our role."

Dave Anderson founded SFC as an opportunity for churches to help families in crisis learn to stabilize and thrive. The program has families offer to temporarily host a child for a short period while parents seek employment or recovery. SFC claims that 90 percent of the children who enter their system will be returned to their biological parents.
