Chinese Christians protest

by Hannah Tooley

The "Make and carry a cross" campaign is a reaction to the state removal of crosses on religious buildings by authorities.

Organisers have asked Christians of all denominations to make crosses and carry them with them in Zhejiang province, a particularly Christian area, as a sign of rebellion.

This comes after the authorities claimed crosses were removed for health and safety reasons to comply with building regulations.

Additionally, Catholic Bishop Msgr. Vincent Zhu Weifang of Wenzhou, another faithful area, has been leading 26 priests from his diocese in protesting against the removal of crosses, according to Christian Today.

For two years the authorities have been enforcing a "beautification" policy, "Three Rectifications and One Demolition",  it involves the removal of allegedly illegal structures.

All community and private structures are impacted by the policy, but Christian leaders in the country claim that they are the main victim.

The communist authorities have been removing crosses, statues and on occasion demolishing church structures since 2013.
