The prime suspect accused of killing Charlie Kirk was reported to authorities by a youth pastor, after he confessed to his father.
Tyler Robinson, 22, lived in Washington, Utah, with his parents.
During a 33-hour manhunt in the wake of Kirk’s murder, the FBI released CCTV images of the prime suspect, dressed in black.
After the shooting, he is alleged to have climbed down from the roof of a building at Utah Valley University before discarding a rifle in a nearby wooded area.
Robinson’s family allegedly recognised him in the images. Tyler then confessed to his father, who turned to a family friend and youth pastor for advice. The pastor, who also worked as a court security officer, alerted US marshals to Robinson’s whereabouts.
“Somebody very close to him turned him in,” President Trump announced. “It was a man of faith... a minister who was involved with law enforcement.”
Tyler Robinson’s father also worked in law enforcement, and his mother worked for a disability care company.
A social media post from 2017 shows Robinson dressed for Halloween in a costume that looks as though he is riding on Donald Trump’s shoulders.
Sources close to the family say he had become increasingly political in recent years.
Other social media posts show the family on shooting trips, and Robinson using rifles.
