Canon Andrew White joins Barnabas Fund as Patron

by Sam Hailes

He's currently the vicar of St George's Church, Baghdad, the only Anglican church in Iraq, although he was forced to leave in November 2014 when fears for his security grew.

Anti-persecution charity the Barnabus Fund released a statement explaining "In recent years, Canon Andrew White's Foundation for Reconciliation and Relief in the Middle East has worked closely with Barnabas Fund to aid and support persecuted Christians in the region."

Religious freedom and anti-slavery campaigner Baroness Caroline Cox has also been appointed as Patron of Barnabas Fund while Lord Reading has moved from Patron to chair of the board.

The changes at the top of the Barnabas Fund are completed by the appointments of new senior management - Hendrik Storm as Chief Executive Officer and Allan Lee Jr as Chief Operating Officer.

The development comes in the wake of a year of controversy for the Barnabas Fund's founder Dr Patrick Sookhdeo.

Sookhdeo was found guilty of sexual assault and intimidating witnesses in February. After serving his three month house arrest sentence, he continued in his role as trustee and international director of Barnabas Fund.

Last month a police spokesperson confirmed a 68 year old man was arrested at Heathrow Apriport on suspicion of Indecent Assault. Sookhdeo is expected to appear in court to face this charge in the new year.

In the meantime, Barnabas has confirmed Sookhdeo has now resigned from all roles within the organisation.
