A Texas nurse has shared moving footage showing young girls from Camp Mystic singing worship songs as they were evacuated from devastating floodwaters last week.
Devon Paige, a nurse from Grosebeck, posted videos to TikTok capturing the moment a bus full of girls was driven away from the camp’s rising floodwaters and debris.
In one clip, the girls can be heard worshipping together in an effort to stay calm. Paige wrote in the caption: “The girls are singing to try and calm everyone.”
At least 27 campers and staff lost their lives when floodwaters tore through Camp Mystic in Kerr County. Around 750 children were attending the all-girls Christian summer camp at the time.
Earlier videos shared by Paige show campers playing, eating together and celebrating birthdays, now a poignant glimpse of life before the tragedy struck.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who visited the site, described the destruction as unlike anything he’d ever witnessed.
He said: “The height the rushing water reached to the top of cabins was shocking. We won’t stop until we find every girl who was in those cabins.”
In a statement read by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Camp Mystic’s leadership described the flooding as a “catastrophic level” event. With roads washed away and no power or water, the camp said it was struggling to get more help to the area.
