Burning Man kicks Christian group out of festival

by Rachel Huston

A Christian group was reportedly escorted out of Burning Man on Tuesday night after repeated warnings over alleged violations of the festival's privacy and consent rules.

The camp, called Shift the Atmosphere, said it was targeted for openly preaching Christianity and claimed its removal violated Burning Man's founding principle of "radical inclusion".

The forty-year-old annual community event happens at its own temporary self-governing city in Nevada's Black Rock Desert and is dedicated to art and a rejection of commerce. Every group officially registers as a "theme camp".

Shift the Atmosphere's spokesperson John Hinerman posted on Instagram that the group had come to "love on and serve the burners".

But Burning Man officials said the group violated its core tenet of privacy. As a private, ticketed event, it enforces strict privacy rules, including limits on photography and video that typically require the prior consent of anyone filmed.

Witnesses told the Reno Gazette-Journal, part of the USA Today Network, that camp members used aggressive tactics on both adults and children while sharing The Gospel. According to witnesses, the group drew attendees in by offering coffee and matcha before encouraging them to accept Jesus as their saviour.

Some attendees said they simply brushed off the approaches, while others described the tactics as unwelcome and aggressive for the event.

But Hinerman said they were deliberately being thrown out because of their faith posting on Instagram:

"Burning Man is discriminating us and breaking their own rules of being 'radically inclusive' and KICKING us out for being Christians?!"
