Bishops speak out after rabbi calls for churches to burn

by Hannah Tooley

The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land filed a police report against Rabbi Ben-Zion Gopstein after he was seen to express support for the burning of churches during a panel discussion.

Rabbi Gopstein, head of Organization for Prevention of Assimilation in the Holy Land, opposes the integration of Jews and non-Jews.

The bishops collectively said: "These remarks, which came after a troublesome act of vandalism against the Holy Place of Tabgha in Israel, are unacceptable to the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land.

"They incite hatred and pose a real threat to the Christian religious buildings in the country. The Catholic community in the Holy Land is fearful and feels in danger."

They stressed that the police need to ensure real protection for Christians as well as their places of worship in the country.
