Rev Dr Hkalam Samson, former President of the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC), was released from prison in Myanmar/Burma on 23rd July, sources have confirmed to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).
Rev Dr Samson, known for his human rights advocacy, was initially arrested on 5th December 2022, at Mandalay International Airport while attempting to travel to Bangkok. He was sentenced to six years in prison on 7th April 2023, on charges of unlawful association, defaming the State, and terrorism.
Earlier this year, on 17th April, Rev Dr Samson was released from Myitkyina Prison as part of a national amnesty. However, he was returned to the prison grounds later that same day and placed in a house as a ‘guest’.
CSW’s CEO, Scot Bower, expressed his support, stating: "CSW welcomes the release of Reverend Dr. Samson, who should never have been imprisoned in the first place.
"He is a non-violent Christian pastor and an internationally respected human rights advocate. We urge the Myanmar military to ensure that he and his family are allowed to enjoy his freedom in peace and without fear of further legal prosecution."
