Australian firefighters respond to church children's thank-you letters

by Heather Preston

Firefighters have responded after children from a church in Wales wrote letters of thanks to those tackling the wildfires in Australia.

Members of the Melbourne Fire Department (MFB) received words of support from children of Messy Church at Caergwrle Methodist Church, Wrexham.

Amongst the letters was one from s child named Alfie. It read: "Thank you so much for trying to save Australia and its animals from the fires, and for putting the fires out. Keep on going."

In a response shared on social media the MFB expressed their gratitude saying: "MFB was delighted to receive handwritten letters from Messy Church-BRF in Wales, United Kingdom thanking Australian #firefighters for their work battling the #bushfires.

"MFB is working seamlessly alongside our emergency service partners in response to the bushfires. On behalf of all the firefighters, emergency service workers and volunteers who have worked so hard in response, relief and for the recovery period to come - thank you Messy Church for the kind words and messages of support."

Since October 2019, Australia has been battling some of the most deadly bushfires it has seen in decades.

Thousands of homes have been destroyed and 33 people have died - including at least three volunteer firefighters.

An estimated one billion animals have also been killed by the blazes.
A memorial service was held in honour of those who died in Sydney on Sunday.
It was attended by relatives of the victims along with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and emergency services.
