Authorities in Arizona have arrested a suspect in the killing of Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann, whose violent death shocked the community earlier this spring.

The 76-year-old pastor of New River Bible Chapel was found murdered in his home on 28th April.

Officials now believe his death was motivated by religion, as reported by The Independent.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Adam Christopher Sheafe, 50, who they say crossed state lines with plans to carry out multiple attacks.

Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said: “This case was tragic and bizarre.”

Authorities revealed that Sheafe had allegedly abandoned his job and home before travelling to Arizona with a plan to kill.

Pastor Bill was the only confirmed victim, but investigators suspect others may have been targeted.

Captain David Lee of the MCSO added: “The information we have indicates that the motive was religious in nature, and that there were a number of future victims planned...”

Local residents had reported Sheafe’s suspicious behaviour prior to the killing, but the tip came too late to prevent the tragedy.

The FBI is assisting with the case, and more charges are expected as the investigation continues.
