A Georgia megachurch has helped connect hundreds of its members to new jobs after an altar call turned into a spontaneous job fair.

Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, told his congregation on Sunday that “we were able to offer 300 job opportunities last Sunday” after praying for those out of work and inviting hiring managers in the church to share vacancies.

“Right in that moment, organically, we found managers who were in our church, directors, supervisors, even owners,” he explained. “We took them in the back after service was over.”

The church’s action comes amid concerns over rising unemployment in the black community.

Official figures show black unemployment in the US stood at 7.5 per cent in August, more than double the rate for white workers.

Bryant urged his 10,000-member congregation to see the initiative as an example of what the Church can do to meet practical as well as spiritual needs.
