Alexei Navalny's wife brands Putin a 'satanist' after row over husband's dead body

by Lydia Davies

Yulia Navalnaya, the grieving widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has accused Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, of holding her husband's body "hostage" and branded Putin a practitioner of "Satanism".

Navalnaya's accusations come amid a dispute over the release of her husband's body for burial, with suspicions growing that there is evidence on his corpse that he was murdered in his jail.

The 47-year-old - who vowed to continue her husband's campaigns following his death in a penal colony last week - believes he was killed on Putin's orders.

She claimed the dictator's publicised belief in the Orthodox Christian faith is a sham and suggested he had delighted in "bombing peaceful people in their sleep at night" in Ukraine.

"It's Vladimir Putin who gives orders, sitting at the far end of this terrible chain of approvals. No, don't give the body back. Put pressure on his mother. Break her," she said.

The widow went on to say that Putin's ultimatum was that Navalny's family agree to bury him on his terms in a "distant corner of an unknown cemetery" or he wouldn't give the body back.

She said: "These are the conditions Putin is imposing - that same Putin, who likes to show he is a devout Christian.

"God is love, that despair is a sin. Even in [her husband's] letters from prison, he said that he did not feel hatred towards his tormentors. What Putin is doing now is hatred. It's not even hatred, it's some kind of Satanism, paganism. What are you going to do with his body? How low will you go, torturing the man you killed? You [Putin] insult believers and atheists, Christians and Muslims.

"If you really consider yourselves a believer, then know you will answer for all of this - and not just before people. You will also answer for the war you started two years ago, by the way, also using the values of Christianity."

Navalnaya continues to demand the return of her husband's body and remains steadfast in her commitment to carry on her husband's legacy and fight against corruption and oppression in Russia.
