Airport chaplain: Brussels bombings "more terrifying than I ever thought it would be"

by Aaron James

Revd Edwin Velum's speaking after at least 31 people lost their lives in twin blasts at Zaventem Airport and another blast at Maelbeek metro station, close to European Parliament.

The minister, who's been comforting victims at the airport, also said that given the amount of terror attacks Belgium's experienced in recent years, he and other Belgians are now "just waiting" for them to happen.

For example in May 2014 an Islamic State gunmen opened fire at the Jewish Museum of Belgium, killing four people.

And in January 2015 Belgian police carried out an anti-terror raid in the city Verviers, killing two jihadis.

It's thought terrorists launched Tuesday's attacks after Belgian police arrested Salah Abdeslam in Brussels, the main suspect behind the Paris terror attacks, on Friday.

Revd Edwin told Premier's News Hour: "I just live a few kilometres outside of Brussels, so we're used to seeing the army every day.

"As a Belgian... we're waiting for this. It's a little bit sad, but we're just waiting for this to happen.

"This is more terrifying than I ever thought it would be.

"It's a very sad story and it's a very sad view to see that your own country's under attack."
