'A gift from God': Rupert Murdoch, 92, proposes to police chaplain ahead of fifth marriage

by Sophie Drew

Rupert Murdoch's new wife-to-be, Ann Lesley Smith, has described their relationship as a "gift from God," as the couple announced their engagement.

The former police chaplain met the billionaire businessman last September, and he proposed on St. Patrick's Day.

For the 92-year-old media mogul, plans for a wedding in late summer will make for his fifth marriage, following his divorce from Jerry Hall last year.

He told the New York Post – one of his own publications - "I dreaded falling in love - but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I'm happy."

He added: "We're both looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together."

After 14 years as a widow, Ann is overjoyed by the engagement. She told the New York Post that the pair are a great match: “Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman... so I speak Rupert's language. We share the same beliefs."

According to the Daily Mail, Ann found faith in Jesus Christ following a difficult divorce from her first husband.

She then married country music star Chester Smith, a fellow Christian whom she met when volunteering as a police chaplain.

He died in 2008 from a heart attack.
