Worshippers return to Charleston church

Nine people died during a mass shooting at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Church last Wednesday night, including the pastor Revd Clementa Pinckney.

Huge numbers of people packed inside the church for Bible study after they walked behind the body of the pastor as he was laid to rest in honour in the South Carolina Rotunda.

Revd Pinckney had served as a senator for nearly 20 years and had known President Obama through his involvement in politics.

Mourners filed past the pastor's open casket to honour the 41-year-old who was the youngest African-American member elected to the state House of Representatives at that time.

The other people killed were Cynthia Hurd, 54, Revd Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45, Tywanza Sanders, 26, Ethel Lance, 70, Revd Depayne Middleton-Doctor, 49, Susie Jackson, 87, Revd Daniel Simmons Sr, 74 and Myra Thompson, 59.

Police have charged 21-year-old Dylann Roof with nine counts of murder.
