World's tiniest nativity goes on display in Birmingham church

by Alex Collett

The world's tiniest nativity scene has gone on display in a church in Birmingham.

The image was created by micro-engraver Graham Short, from the city.

Mr Short crafted the scene by hand on a speck of gold inside the eye of a needle.

Over the weekend, the scene has been on display along with over 50 other cribs at St Laurence Church, Northfield,

Canon Janet Chapman, from St Laurence Church told Premier they are delighted to have it on display within the church: "I think they've just been absolutely amazed.

"We've had a lovely flow of people through the church looking at all the nativitys' and they're all going wow, this is amazing as they go along.

"They get to Graham's and look through the microscope and just can't believe what they're seeing."

When asked how Mr Short created such an intricate piece of art, Canon Chapman explained; "He created the nativity scene in the dead of night.

"So there's no traffic around to give vibrations. He takes drugs to slow his heart rate right down and in between each heartbeat that is when he does the engraving."

There is an impressive display of nativity scenes including a significant piece of art made by Dick Hosking in 1955, who was a principal of the Coventry School of Art.

People will get the chance to vote for their favourite nativity scene and the winners will be announced in the run up to Christmas.

People will be able to view Mr Short's nativity scene, and others, when the church open to the public again this weekend.
