Woman’s TikTok video of her ‘unbaptism’ ritual sparks conversation of religious trauma

by Kelly Valencia

The video of a woman sharing her “unbaptism” ritual on TikTok has sparked conversations of religious trauma on social media.

Originally posted by a user, who now wishes to remain anonymous, the video shows her “undoing” her baptism ceremony in her bathtub.

She could be seen sipping a cup that appears to be filled with wine and eating a slice of apple which she then throws into the bathtub. Some text then appears on screen explaining that she had “recited the Lord’s Prayer backwards”.

The video went viral on TikTok but the user has now made the video private after feeling “overwhelmed” and revealing that the attention the video brought is “bad for her mental health”.

Not many people have followed the trend, but some have taken to the comments section to share their experiences of religious trauma.

“I was abused traumatized and used and then baptized into the Amish Church,” one user shared. “I ran so far and so fast from all of that. I’m going to un baptize myself.”

Another user said: “I went to catholic school for 10 years. It broke me. My experience taught my mom a lot too.”

But there were other users who apologised on behalf of Christians who had hurt her.

“As someone who is rlly passionate abt their faith, im sorry to those who have been mistreated in the church and hope that you discover real love,” one user said.

Another viewer wrote: “As I Christian woman I want to apologize on behalf of others, to anyone who has ever felt anything other than love, understanding & grace, I am so sorry.

“It breaks my heart knowing that because you’ve encountered broken people struggling in their own walk of faith, they have ultimately tarnished your journey.

“I am so sorry & I love you all and wish you everything that is good.”

The video has had thousands of views.
