Fans of the Chicago White Sox have celebrated one of their most recognisable fans, with a special ‘Pope Hat’ game.
Pope Leo, who is from Illinois, has worn the baseball team’s cap in the Vatican. He has also been spotted in footage from the 2005 World Series, a special marker having been placed on his seat.
Hats were given out to all 38,000 fans in attendance at the game against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
Mascot Southpaw joined in, donning a hat and mock vestments in the dugout.
Dominican Sister Mary Jo Sobieck threw the first pitch, as she had done back in 2018. Father Tom Hurley, a priest from Chicago, led the sell-out crowd in the sign of peace at the end of the fifth inning.
White Sox Charities also presented a $14,000 (£10,300) cheque to Midwest Province of the Order of St. Augustine, the order Pope Leo once led.
