West Bank church leaders warn attacks threaten Christian presence

by Lydia Davies

Church leaders in Taybeh, the last all-Christian town in the West Bank, are demanding an “immediate and transparent investigation” after suspected settler attacks.

The attacks included a fire near the historic Church of St George and a Christian cemetery.

In a joint statement, local priests warned the violence “threatens the security and stability of our town” and accused settlers of grazing cattle on family farmland and expanding illegal outposts “under military protection.”

Father Dawood Khoury, Father Jacques-Noble Abed and Father Bishara Fawaz said: “We cannot remain silent in the face of these relentless attacks that threaten our very existence on this land.”

Luke Moon from The Philos Project called the incidents “disturbing” but added: “The reality on the ground is more complicated,” noting some Israeli leaders have condemned settler violence.

The priests are urging international support, legal help, and diplomatic pressure to protect farmland and keep Taybeh’s Christian community rooted in its biblical home.
