'We need to pray for wisdom' says Northern Ireland's Evangelical Alliance as government faces collapse

The call to prayer comes after Sinn Fein formally announced it won't replace Martin McGuinness - who resigned as deputy first minister a week ago.

A snap election is expected to be called on Monday evening in a bid to elect a new government.

McGuiness resigned last Monday over concerns about the Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster's handling of a botched energy scheme.

Because McGuiness and Foster held a joint office, McGuinness' resignation meant that Foster automatically lost her job.

Peter Lynas from the Evangelical Alliance in Northern Ireland told Premier's News Hour that there were deep concerns over the political situation in Northern Ireland that would impact the rest of the UK.

He said: "I think we need to pray for some serious wisdom. Politicians have been very unwise in things that have already been said. The sides are ramping things up instead of looking for compromise. We really need to pray for peace throughout this.

"There are some serious concerns underlying this. Things are a lot more volatile than they have been in a while."
