WATCH: Pastor's parody of song from musical Hamilton

by Cara Bentley

A priest in America has recorded his own version of a song from the musical Hamilton, changing the lyrics to make it about missing church.

'You'll Be Back' is originally sung by the character King George III in the stage show Hamilton, where the King assumes American colonies will regret leaving British rule and that they will return soon.

Reverend Lonnie Lacy, rector of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton, Georgia, has reworked the song, originally by Lin-Manuel Miranda, to remind Christians that church too will return soon.

In his red clerical cloak, the pastor sings: "These days, we can't get together and church doesn't quite feel the same."

Featuring Lonnie dancing down the aisle of his church in his long white robe, a touch of special effects and a little autotune, the video has been viewed over 470,000 times on Youtube.

He sings: "You'll be back with all your friends, and you'll belt out all your favourite hymns, you'll say your prayers and pass the peace, even with the ones you like the least."

He said it was originally for his church's talent show: "Every year at the talent show, I try to do something really big and really ridiculous as the closing act. And it's just become a thing - people know that Lonnie's going to do something big and stupid."

He told the Episcopal News Service: "What I have discovered is there is such a hunger to be back together," saying the video is "a little humorous word of hope, a promise that God is going to get us through this. There is going to be another side of this, and we will get back together."

The video ends with Lonnie untying the ropes cordoning off the pews and getting the Bibles out of the cupboard again and setting up the Communion table ready to welcome people back.
