Walkers highlight Jesus' refugee journey with Welsh village hike from Bethlehem to Egypt

Beginning their journey from Bethlehem in Carmarthenshire last Sunday, they hope to reach the hamlet of Yr Aifft (Welsh for Egypt) in Denbighshire by Thursday 15th December.

The 140 mile 'Escape to Egypt' trek is being organised by Christian Aid Wales to help raise awareness and money for the millions of people around the world it says face spending this Christmas as refugees.

Head of Christian Aid Wales, Huw Thomas, who is taking part himself, told Premier: "We thought this was the right time to undertake this walk, to say that there are communities in Wales that care very deeply about the fact that we are facing a refugee crisis on a scale unseen since World War II and want to do something about that."

"What has been wonderful is the reception we've been having in towns and villages along the journey; chapels have been opening up during the day welcoming us in [and] we've been put up overnight, often by strangers."
