Vatican XI holds on by four runs against Yorkshire's Mount Cricket Club

by Aaron James

Mount Cricket Club from Batley were treated to a tour of St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums before the encounter began.

St Peter's Cricket Club batted first and managed to defend their score by a nail-biting four runs.

It's the first time an all-Muslim team has played a Vatican team, and both sides heralded the occasion as an opportunity to strengthen interfaith relations and have some fun playing the Gentleman's Game.

Fr Eamon O'Higgins, from St Peter's CC, told the BBC: "Religion does not necessarily create conflicts but unites people.

"Other religions, different religions, can live together - want to live together - in peace and harmony, supporting each other, supporting each other's religion."

And Fiha Rashed, from Mount CC, said: "We are here to play the cricket, to engage in contemporary issues, to use the common space, to build and strengthen our interfaith relationships, in terms of addressing community cohesion, equality, and many of the other issues that face the global community."
