Vatican to take in more Syrian refugees

by Hannah Tooley

Pope Francis will take in nine more Syrian refugees.

During his visit to Lesbos in April the pope took three families of refugees back to Rome.

The Vatican called it a "gesture of welcome" to refugees.

Two Christians are among the group being taken in from the Kara Tepe refugee camp, according to Vatican Radio.

The Holy See Press Office says the Community of Sant'Egidio will provide for their housing.

The refugees are all Syrian who had travelled through Turkey, there are six adults and three children.

The pontiff is well known for speaking out about the plight of refugees, in April he tweeted: "Refugees are not numbers, they are people who have faces, names, stories, and need to be treated as such."
