Vatican properties "used as brothels"

by Hannah Tooley

It is also claimed that Vatican officials rented out buildings for little money as favours to powerful colleagues, as well as allowing some addresses to be used as brothels.

The leaked document claims that two of these properties are close to the Italian Parliament.

One Vatican department in particular is named; the Congregation for the Propagation of Faith. It is thought to own hundreds of high-value properties in Rome worth hundreds of millions of Euros.

The Independent has reported that two years ago it came to light that The Vatican bought a €23m (around £16m) share in an apartment block in Rome, which is thought to house Europe's biggest gay sauna.

It has been claimed that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, (pictured) who at the time was in charge of finances under Pope Benedict, was said to have been behind the property purchase in 2008.

Cardinal Bertone has also been accused of using money from a medical charity to refurbish his penthouse.

Sources quoted by Ansa news agency said that Pope Francis wants to close the leak investigation before the Vatican Special Jubilee Year beginning next month.

Vatican police have arrested Monsignor Lucio Vallejo Balda and another official over the leaks.

Four Cardinals have also been questioned.
