Vandals break into Rotherham church, destroy children's nursery and spend hours drinking wine

by Alex Collett

A group of vandals have broken into a church in Rotherham and spent hours drinking wine before leaving with musical instruments.

They also destroyed a children's nursery which helps single mothers with free childcare.

The incident happened on Tuesday 10th of May at St James Church in East Dene, where they stole £20,000 worth of equipment.

The place of worship was covered in broken wine bottles and glass, forcing it to remain closed for a week.

Musical instruments belonging to the Rotherham Town Brass Band were also stolen.

The band have now set up a fundraising page, which reads:  "The band is run by my wonderful brother-in-law who is heartbroken.

"The instruments stolen meant a-lot to the band as they included instruments that were handed down from fathers to sons and from mothers to daughters, so the thieving little toe rags not only stole valuable items but many irreplaceable items in the hearts of the band members and sheets of music.

"We are calling out to all you amazing people in Yorkshire to help!

"If anyone has any of instruments that are listed below and are not using them we would be so grateful to make a home for them with us."
