Ken Brownell, Senior Minister at East London Tabernacle Baptist Church, was speaking a gunman shot dead nine people in a college in Oregon.
The gunman, Chris Harper Mercer, began asking people in the room whether they were Christians or not, before forcing them to stand up if they were.
The 26-year-old opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning.
He was killed in a police shootout.
Ken Brownell told Premier's News Hour better control over who can own a gun is necessary: "It would be wise to have greater gun controls on the types of guns people have, people don't need assault rifles under private ownership.
"And also perhaps better health checks on people's mental health - but there needs to be better checks."
He added that US citizens are protective over the right to bear arms: "In the United States there's a big emphasis on personal, individual freedom - many Christians would identify with that and they would see any challenge to that as a threat to government and their personal liberty, not just in gun control, but perhaps in areas relating to religion."
Premier also spoke to American Pastor Kurt Erikson from Elios Ministries. He said people need to pray: "We have to be men and women of prayer like never before right now."
He added that: "I think there's such a deadlock - speaking from the American side - there's such a deadlock in Washington, I don't think anything's going to happen until Obama is out."
