US pastor marks one year in prison, offered prisoner release exchange

The Turkish president has suggested he may free Pastor Andrew Brunson for Fethullah Gulen, who is currently in America and thought to have started the Gulen coup in July 2016.

Religious freedom charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide has called the offer of an exchange "unacceptable" as it associates the two men with each other. They say Andrew Brunson has nothing to do with the coup.

Khatarza Gondwe from CSW told Premier's the accusation is suspicious: "An innocent man who's been in Turkey for 23 years, openly preaching the gospel, has been linked to a coup which itself has origins which are still unclear."

"If he had been fermenting anything nefarious it would have become clear many, many years before this. So that's why we find it very unacceptable, it seems as if he's being used as a pawn, to gain the extradition of Mr Gulen."

Brunson has been held in Turkey since 7th October 2016, when he and his wife were summoned by the local police in Izmir and accused of being a "threat to the national security".

CSW is urging the Turkish government to release him and allow his to return home.
