US Mike Pence says the Bible guided him to defy Donald Trump and certify 2020 election results

by Kelly Valencia

Mike Pence, who served as vice president of the United States under Donald Trump's administration, has recently said the Bible helped him to confirm Joe Biden's election victory.

In January this year, Mike Pence decided not to support Trump's pleas to overturn the 2020 presidential results causing the break down of relations with the former president.

Speaking at an event at the University of Iowa, Mike Pence said it was James Madison - referring to the fourth US president and "father of the constitution" - as well as a Bible verse that led him to make the decision.

"Psalm 15 says he who keeps his oath even when it hurts," Pence said.

He was answering a question from a student named Jared, who had asked for the name of the person who made him change his mind to turn on Donald Trump. In his question, Jared also suggested Pence had made the decision because he didn't want to damage his future chances of running for office.

In his response, Mike Pence denied that it would have hurt his chances of running for president if he had supported Trump's plan. He also mentioned a letter he wrote to Congress at the time, expressing concerns about voting irregularities.

"I continue to share those concerns, and I support efforts in states to improve voter integrity as has been done in places like Georgia and Arizona and elsewhere."

He continued: "I understand the disappointment in the election. You might remember I was on the ballot."

"But you've got to be willing to do your duty. And the time may come that some of you are in that position, or one like it. And I just have a feeling based on the shining faces I'm seeing around here you're going to be men and women who do your duty in that time as well," he concluded.

Mike Pence is recognised as one of the most influential figures among conservative evangelicals in the US. In 2020, an American bishop called him one of the most persecuted Christians in the US as media criticise him because "he actually believes the Bible. They hate him for believing the Bible."
