Rare Bible-infused Bob Dylan lyrics up for auction

by Anna Rees

Two pages of newly rediscovered lyrics written by iconic singer-songwriter Bob Dylan are set to go up for auction later this year.

The lyrics, written in ballpoint pen, contain strong references to the Bible and are written on phone pad paper from the Ritz Carlton hotel in New York.

Professor Anne Margaret Daniel of New York University estimates them to be from when Dylan was working on the album Infidels, which came out in October 1983.

A harmonica will also be auctioned alongside one page of the rare lyrics. The instrument is thought to have been gifted to the document’s previous owner by Dylan.

The auction is not the only way to access memorabilia from Dylan’s career, as the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York is running its exhibition Bob Dylan Remastered: Drawings from the Road from 25th May until 15th September.

The exhibition features 92 artworks signed by Dylan, made during the Never Ending Tour from 1988-92. Dylan described the creative process behind them as a as way of “refocussing the restless mind”.

Bob Dylan, now 83, is one of the most popular songwriters of all time, selling 125 million records worldwide.

In 2022 it was estimated by Forbes that he has a net worth of approximately $130m (£102m).
