UN establishes commemorative day recognising victims of violence because of religion

On May 28, 2019, Poland, supported by several other countries, including; Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United States, tabled a UN General Assembly resolution establishing the UN International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief on August 22.

The resolution was adopted by consensus.

The initiative and the primary resolution was drafted by Ewelina Ochab, a Christian, Polish, independent legal researcher.

Speaking to Premier about its potential impact, she said: "There was such a great need to establish such a day that I just needed to continue with the proposal, it will make a big difference and until now, there was no such a UN day focused on any aspects of religious freedom.

"If you look at how other international UN-led days work, they get a lot of attention, whether in the media or the various events organised surrounding those days, so it's not only to have a day on its own, it manages to get the needed attention and trigger action as well."
